Three Minus One: Parents’ Stories of Love and Loss is a collection of intimate, soul-baring stories and artwork by parents who have lost a child to stillbirth, miscarriage, or neonatal death, inspired by the film Return to Zero. The loss of a child is unlike any other, and the impact that it has on the mother, the father, their family, and their friends is devastating—a shockwave of pain and guilt that spreads through their entire community. But the majority of those affected, especially mothers, often suffer their pain in silence, convinced that their grief and trauma is theirs to bear alone. This anthology of raw memoirs, heartbreaking stories, truthful poems, beautiful painting, and stunning photography from the parents who have suffered child loss offers insight into this unique, devastating and life-changing experience—breaking the silence and offering a ray of hope to the many parents out there in search of answers, understanding, and healing.

Our understanding of how the human brain performs mathematical calculations is far from complete, but in recent years there have been many exciting breakthroughs by scientists all over the world. Now, in The Number Sense, Stanislas Dehaene offers a fascinating look at this recent research, in an enlightening exploration of the mathematical mind. Dehaene begins with the eye-opening discovery that animals--including rats, pigeons, raccoons, and chimpanzees--can perform simple mathematical calculations, and that human infants also have a rudimentary number sense. Dehaene suggests that this rudimentary number sense is as basic to the way the brain understands the world as our perception of color or of objects in space, and, like these other abilities, our number sense is wired into the brain. These are but a few of the wealth of fascinating observations contained here. We also discover, for example, that because Chinese names for numbers are so short, Chinese people can remember up to nine or ten digits at a time--English-speaking people can only remember seven. The book also explores the unique abilities of idiot savants and mathematical geniuses, and we meet people whose minute brain lesions render their mathematical ability useless. This new and completely updated edition includes all of the most recent scientific data on how numbers are encoded by single neurons, and which brain areas activate when we perform calculations. Perhaps most important, The Number Sense reaches many provocative conclusions that will intrigue anyone interested in learning, mathematics, or the mind. "A delight." --Ian Stewart, New Scientist "Read The Number Sense for its rich insights into matters as varying as the cuneiform depiction of numbers, why Jean Piaget's theory of stages in infant learning is wrong, and to discover the brain regions involved in the number sense." --The New York Times Book Review "Dehaene weaves the latest technical research into a remarkably lucid and engrossing investigation. Even readers normally indifferent to mathematics will find themselves marveling at the wonder of minds making numbers." --Booklist

This book delivers an introduction to the theory programme called structure-genetic sociology. I developed this theory programme in the past 30 years. In the meantime, I have written ten books and numerous articles about the subject. The programme mainly bases on developmental psychology and has worked it out to a theory of the evolution of humankind. It encompasses a theory of social change and social evolution, a theory of the development of economy, society, culture, sciences, religion, morals, law, and manners. The fact of the anthropological evolution of humankind from lower, childlike anthropological stages to more elaborated stages is the most groundbreaking and fascinating fact in all social sciences and humanities. It is the only phenomenon within humanities and social sciences whose relevance and importance corresponds to the fact of biological evolution provided by Darwin?'s evolutionary theory. This fact forms the kernel of the entire theory programme.Structure-genetic sociology is the theoretical heir of the outstanding classical approaches such as the classical sociologies, the classical British anthropology, the ethnology of Lucien L vy-Bruhl, the developmental psychology of Jean Piaget, and the philosophy of symbolic forms of Ernst Cassirer. We can understand these classical achievements only against the background of the more elaborated empirical foundations and theoretical structures of my structure-genetic sociology. It helps to verify, to correct, to develop, and to improve the best traditions of social sciences and humanities. Structure-genetic sociology formulates the essence of three hundred years of social sciences and humanities.

This paper discusses Mali’s Request for a Three-Year Arrangement Under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF). The economy is recovering and inflationary pressures have abated. After a 0.4 percent GDP decline in 2012, Mali’s economy is on the mend. The improvement in the security situation and the resumption of donor assistance has helped revive business confidence. Activity is picking up in the service sectors hardest hit by the crisis (commerce, hotels, and restaurants). The banking sector is showing signs of strain. Resumption of donor support brightens the economic outlook; however, the generally positive outlook is subject to several risks.

"Everything have started by some few dreams, which not just that I would neverforget my entire life but more than that, I don't think it was just dreams in the rightsense of the notion"dream". I was conscious during the rest that I was sleeping. What itcould be said that I was dreaming is nothing else than a real experience in a space fromwhere I can come back anytime in the world where I am sleeping.I was at the beginning somewhere on the fringe of an unknown town, in the night. While I have looked at the multicolored lights from any distance, I started tobecome easier, so easy that I felt in a moment I could fly." This 2013 Article IV Consultation highlights that Sierra Leone has made significant progress in macroeconomic stabilization over the last five years. Real GDP growth averaged some 7 percent, driven by output expansion in agriculture, mining, and services; as well as the scaling-up of infrastructure investment. Nonetheless, important impediments to broad-based growth remain, including large infrastructure gaps, insufficient energy supply, and limited access to safe water and sanitation. Medium-term prospects are positive. Growth is projected to remain robust, mainly driven by iron ore production and continued high public investment; while inflation is expected to decline further as monetary and fiscal policies remain prudent.

This paper focuses on the Kyrgyz Republic’s Fifth Review Under the Three-Year Arrangement Under the Extended Credit Facility, and Request for Modification of Performance Criteria. Growth was strong over the first nine months of 2013, and inflation has declined steadily. Intensive public investment programs and the decline in gold prices are putting temporary pressures on the current account. The medium-term outlook is broadly favorable, despite the slowdown in the region. System-wide financial stability indicators have been broadly sound. The IMF staff recommends completion of the fifth review and approval of the request for modification of the performance criteria for end-December 2013.

Most structural benchmarks were also met. The authorities are requesting a waiver for the nonobservance of the performance criterion on net credit to the government at end-June 2013. The IMF staff supports this request and recommends completion of the sixth and final review under the ECF arrangement.

When fourteen-year-old Jack Elliot flees Minnesota after killing a man in a whorehouse, he never expects to find himself in France, hunkered down in a trench as World War I rages around him. Ever resilient, Jack transitions from an ambulance driver at Verdun to become one of the few American volunteers to fly in a French fighter squadron.Jousting with German aces in flimsy wood and canvas "aeroplanes" during the day is hard enough for the inexperienced Jack without the additional pressure of having to match the bacchanalian excesses of his squadron mates at night, all while staying one step ahead of his past. But Jack figures that if he can shoot down five Germans and attain the coveted "Ace" status, all his troubles will be over.Set over the battlefields of Europe and the vast deserts of North Africa, An Ace Minus One is authentic in its depictions of early aviation and the colorful men and women who made this period one of the most exciting in history.
