Foreword by Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence. This groundbreaking book, from one of the global innovators in the integration of brain science with psychotherapy, offers an extraordinary guide to the practice of “mindsight,” the potent skill that is the basis for both emotional and social intelligence. From anxiety to depression and feelings of shame and inadequacy, from mood swings to addictions, OCD, and traumatic memories, most of us have a mental “trap” that causes recurring conflict in our lives and relationships. Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and co-director of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center, shows us how to use mindsight to escape these traps. Through his synthesis of a broad range of scientific research with applications to everyday life, Dr. Siegel has developed novel approaches that have helped hundreds of patients free themselves from obstacles blocking their happiness. By cultivating mindsight, all of us can effect positive, lasting changes in our brains—and our lives. A book as inspiring as it is profound, Mindsight can help us master our emotions, heal our relationships, and reach our fullest potential.

How to imagine the imagination is a topic that draws philosophers the way flowers draw honeybees. From Plato and Aristotle to Wittgenstein and Sartre, philosophers have talked and written about this most elusive of topics--that is, until contemporary analytic philosophy of mind developed. Perhaps it is the vast range of the topic that has scared off our contemporaries, ranging as it does from mental images to daydreams. The guiding thread of this book is the distinction Colin McGinn draws between perception and imagination. Clearly, seeing an object is similar in certain respects to forming a mental image of it, but it is also different. McGinn shows what the differences are, arguing that imagination is a sui generis mental faculty. He goes on to discuss the nature of dreaming and madness, contending that these are primarily imaginative phenomena. In the second half of the book McGinn focuses on what he calls cognitive (as opposed to sensory) imagination, and investigates the role of imagination in logical reasoning, belief formation, the understanding of negation and possibility, and the comprehension of meaning. His overall claim is that imagination pervades our mental life, obeys its own distinctive principles, and merits much more attention.

This book investigates the astonishing claim that blind persons, including those blind from birth, can actually "see" during near-death or out-of-body episodes. The authors present their findings in scrupulous detail, investigating case histories of blind persons who have actually reported visual experiences under these conditions. There is fascinating evidence that the blind do "see" in these moments, but it is not sight as we think of it. Ring and Cooper suggest a kind of "transcendental awareness" they refer to as Mindsight. It involves seeing in detail, sometimes from all angles at once, with everything in focus, and a sense of "knowing" the subject, not just visually, but with multisensory knowledge. Human beings may be more talented than we think, gifted with amazing abilities of perception. This book is an opportunity to assess the evidence for yourself.

Learn about the joys and pitfalls of parenting—from infancy to adolescence—and strategies for raising well-adjusted, competent children with open minds and big hearts, from two of Tarcher/Penguin’s favorite authors. Now only $25.99! Parenting from the Inside Out by Dr. Daniel Siegel How many parents have found themselves thinking: I can't believe I just said to my child the very thing my parents used to say to me! Am I just destined to repeat the mistakes of my parents? In Parenting from the Inside Out, child psychiatrist Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., and early childhood expert Mary Hartzell, M.Ed., explore the extent to which our childhood experiences actually do shape the way we parent. Drawing upon stunning new findings in neurobiology and attachment research, they explain how interpersonal relationships directly impact the development of the brain, and offer parents a step-by-step approach to forming a deeper understanding of their own life stories, which will help them raise compassionate and resilient children. Born out of a series of parents' workshops that combined Siegel's cutting-edge research on how communication impacts brain development with Hartzell's thirty years of experience as a child-development specialist and parent educator, Parenting from the Inside Out guides parents through creating the necessary foundations for loving and secure relationships with their children. Little Big Minds by Marietta McCarty A guide for parents and educators to sharing the enduring ideas of the biggest minds throughout the centuries—from Plato to Jane Addams—with the "littlest" minds. Children are no strangers to cruelty and courage, to love and to loss, and in this unique book teacher and educational consultant Marietta McCarty reveals that they are, in fact, natural philosophers. Drawing on a program she has honed in schools around the country over the last fifteen years, Little Big Minds (a New York Times extended list bestseller) guides parents and educators in introducing philosophy to K-8 children in order to develop their critical thinking, deepen their appreciation for others, and brace them for the philosophical quandaries that lurk in all of our lives, young or old. Arranged according to themes-including prejudice, compassion, and death-and featuring the work of philosophers from Plato and Socrates to the Dalai Lama and Martin Luther King Jr., this step-by-step guide to teaching kids how to think philosophically is full of excellent discussion questions, teaching tips, and group exercises.

Very few people give a moment's thought to what they believe, how they're perceived, and what they want to achieve. It's easy to blame the educational system and its focus on the rote memorization of facts and figures. It's easy to blame the business world for training employees to play nice in the corporate sandbox. And it's equally easy to point a finger at parents who preached, "You can be whatever you want to be," but never gave their children the tools to figure out exactly what that might be. The focus in school, business, and at home has long been on the endgame - i.e., an impressive response to the cocktail party query: "So what do you do?" In reality, the response to "What do you do?" pales in comparison to such queries as: "Who are you?" "What do you want to achieve with your life?" and "Why is that important to you?" Unfortunately, few people ask the latter type of questions and the blame falls squarely on the individual. Yes, your parents, teachers, and bosses may have avoided the subject for a thousand different reasons; but you ignore it at your own peril. You ignore it at the risk of living a life that follows blindly rather than leading enthusiastically from your heart, mind, and soul. Success and fulfillment in today's world require a strong focus on personal reflection and self-knowledge. 20/20 Mind Sight responds to that need and delivers a powerful kick-in-the-ass, a solid rationale, and a practical framework for developing and living a personal game plan that leads to where we want to go. 20/20 Mind Sight is much more than a book. It is designed as the starting point in a lifelong journey. The book features more than 25 exercises to help readers explore their core values and aspirations, develop a meaningful personal brand, and avoid the life of "quiet desperation" that Henry David Thoreau described 160 years ago and is still prevalent today. The exercises include: -The Johari Window: a snapshot of how you view yourself vs. how others view you. -Jungian Typology: a detailed summary of your communication and behavioral styles. -Implicit Association Test: an eye-opening look at the biases we hold deep inside. -Satisfaction with Life Scale: a broad-brush yardstick re life fulfillment and personal satisfaction. -The Grit Survey: a measure of one's resilience and commitment. -Locus of Control: a determination of whether you believe you control your destiny vs. some outside influence(s).
