Art historians and cultural scholars have become interested in the subject of exile as the locus of artistic experience as well as in the travels and wanderings of painters, sculptors, and architects in search of new insights about the world. Researchers have also focused on artworks created in the context of migration. This volume broadens the perspective on these phenomena, which have been studied only separately until now.

This new study draws on analysis, literary criticism, and source studies to propose a new conception of the nineteenth-century romantic cycle. Rather than a unified whole, the cycle is seen as a fragmentary and open-ended form, which enables Schumann to express the romantic themes of transcendence and ineffability in musical terms.

Throughout his career, David Lewin labored to make even the most abstract theory speak to the experience of the ordinary listener. This book combines many of Lewin's classic articles on song and opera with newly drafted chapters on songs of Brahms, Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, and Milton Babbitt. Bound together by Lewin's cogent insight, the resulting collection constitutes a major statement concerning the methodological problems associated with interpretation of texted music.

Arguably no other nineteenth-century German composer was as literate or as finely attuned to setting verse as Robert Schumann. Finson challenges long-standing assumptions about Schumann's Lieder, engaging traditionally held interpretations. Arranged in part thematically, rather than merely by strict compositional chronology, this book speaks to the heart of Schumann's music.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Die Heimkehr aus der Fremde (often referred to in English as Son and Stranger) is a one-act Singspiel written by Felix Mendelssohn in 1829 to a German libretto by the composer's friend Karl Klingemann, a poet who would later provide the same service for the oratorio Elijah. The English title derives from a translation by critic, playwright, and poet Henry Fothergill Chorley created for a London production of 1851 and still in use for the rare revivals in English-speaking countries. The title is sometimes also translated as Return of the Roamer. The work was published posthumously as Mendelssohn's opus 89.

Singing Schumann is likely to become the standard introduction to some of the best-loved songs in the singer's repertoire. Written by a distinguished performer and internationally known teacher, the book offers astute, practical advice for bringing Robert Schumann's Lieder to life in performance. Richard Miller guides the reader through the interpretation of all of Schumann's solo and duet songs, drawing thoroughly on Schumann's compositional style and its historical background. In addition to covering the "familiar forty"--the much-performed songs Schumann composed in and around 1840 while trying to win the hand of Clara Wieck--Miller takes an in-depth look at the lesser known early and later songs. In particular, he focuses on the rich and varied repertoire of Schumann's later years, challenging the conventional view that these works reflect a decline in the composer's creative powers. Singing Schumann begins with an overview of Schumann as a song composer and then proceeds to survey the entire repertoire, song by song. It features the well-known cycles, including the Eichendorff Liederkreis, Frauenliebe und -leben, and Dichterliebe, as well as the Liederalbum f?r die Jugend and settings of texts by Goethe, Burns, R?ckert, and Kulmann. Using numerous musical examples, Miller uncovers Schumann's characteristic compositional devices and describes his novel and experimental approaches to the interpretation of texts, often achieved through exceptionally colorful keyboard accompaniments. Musically sensitive and eminently readable, Singing Schumann is an invaluable guide for teachers, coaches, pianists, and singers.

Was ist Fremdheit?
